Today, June 15, is World Elder Abuse Day. A variety of events occur on this day to raise awareness of elder abuse and to highlight ways to challenge it.

Elder abuse affects both men and women across the globe and transcends wealth and culture.

State MP Nick Goiran discussed this sensitive issue, saying the abuse is perpetrated by a family member about 70 per cent of the time, which leaves many victims feeling helpless.

“Elder abuse can take various forms. The most common is financial abuse, but it can also be physical, psychological, sexual or even social abuse. It’s a very difficult issue to get to the bottom of because it often goes unreported, and the person they would normally turn to for help is often the one perpetrating the abuse,” Mr Goiran said.
