A 32-year-old woman just discovered why we use abbreviations like 1st and 4th, and she wasn’t the only one who didn’t know! In her Tiktok video Gemma Lou explains how the last few letters from the written-out words are taken and placed behind the corresponding numbers. Thousands online admitted they had no idea this was the reason why.
“At my big age of 32 I have just learnt that the “st” in 1st, “nd” in 2nd and “rd” in 3rd are because they are the last letters of the words “first” and so forth,’ Gemma, from the UK, wrote in the short video. How does the rule apply? 1st – first 2nd – second 3rd – third 4th – fourth 5th – fifth”
