Naturopath Mel Jaye, joined Mike to explain why iron is so important especially for women.
Our bodies need iron to make haemoglobin – the part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen around your body. It is also important for muscle strength, energy and good mental function. Dietary iron is found in both animal and plant products and certain foods and drinks affect how much iron your body absorbs.
Iron deficiency is when the stores of iron in your body are too low. There is a greater need for iron during pregnancy, lactation, and when there is regular blood loss from heavy periods. Taking iron supplements regularly and eating red meat and not absorbing iron? Speak to a qualified healthcare practitioner.
“It’s a cliché but if you’re not filling your own cup, (if you’re not) putting your own fuel in your body, good food, nutrition, minerals and taking care of your body, then you aren’t going to be caring for others at the optimal level that you can.”
