“To me, nurses are nothing less than warriors. Often garbed in theatre scrubs, masks, gloves, protective face shields, and eyewear. Nurses have become the sentinel standing between their patients and COVID. Moreover, their roles have rapidly evolved with unheard-of directives such as ‘stay at home orders’, ‘border closures’, and ‘emergency mandates’.
The nurse of 2022 is unrecognisable to one of just a few years ago. Now, they need to be fluent in digital compliance as everything is on-line. They need to be tireless, as hospitals and health services beg them to work another shift. They need to be administrators, managing their own caseloads with multiple patients with multiple illnesses. Some work in remote locations or in patients’ homes or workplaces. Many nurses work alone, for fear of having staff too close to each other. So, if you know a nurse, why not drop them a line and say “Thanks!”
“Nurses are the backbone of our health system…computers and artificial intelligence can come and take away diagnostic skills or pathology skills but they can’t take away a caring knowledgeable nurse.”
