In 1890, a woman attempted to recreate the famous novel ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. Nellie Bly brought an overcoat, underwear, a small bag of toiletries, and a bag of money. Using steamships and railroad systems caused occasional setbacks. But she managed to complete her journey with 8 days to spare!

James Wide worked for the Cape Town – Port Elizabeth Railway service. But after losing his legs in an accident, he bought a baboon and trained him to push his wheelchair and operate the railway signals. After initial scepticism, the railway decided to officially employ the baboon. He was paid twenty cents a day, and half a bottle of beer each week. After 9 years of service he died of tuberculosis.
