Simon Creek, from HHG Legal, joined Mike to talk about the Religious Discrimination bill.
The Commonwealth has implemented a sex, racial, disability and age discrimination act. However there is no religious discrimination legislation to protect people of faith. Or those who choose to not have faith. Scott Morrison says the introduction of the religious discrimination bill 2021, will fix this issue. “The draft is certainly more balanced and it hits its main aim which will allow religious organisations to effectively operate in accordance with what they believe or don’t believe.”
But this has been a divisive issue across the country, with certain sectors of the thinking it is insensitive. Organisations like Equality Australia, are concerned that this bill will enable faith-based organisations to discriminate against those in the LGBTQ community.
“I can see the concern. It is not a concern, in my view, that should override the main aim and the main success of this draft bill. Which is to bring some protections to all religious believers even if they are atheists.”
