As we move towards the end of Heart Health Month, it’s important to understand the biggest risk factor for heart disease.
Fiona Kane, Mind Body Eating Coach, Nutritionist & Holistic Counsellor joined Mike to talk about insulin resistance. We’ve been led to think that our cholesterol number is the most important figure, but this is not true. Insulin resistance is the major driver of heart disease. Metabolic Syndrome, which is better described as insulin resistance syndrome, is one of our biggest health issues. Around the world it is estimated that between 25-50% of people have metabolic syndrome. This is a huge risk factor for poor outcomes with Covid-19 and also a big predictor of heart attack and heart disease.
“The truth is children are getting these issues now, I’ve seen 10 year old’s with Fatty Liver Disease. Once upon a time it was an older persons disease but unfortunately it’s becoming an everybody’s disease.”
There is lots of things you can do to improve your metabolic health. Increasing your Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Magnesium and Omega 3 intake, getting enough sleep, moving your body and eating less processed carbs and sugars are major factors.
