Clinical Psychologist, Janice Dommisse, joined Bec and Jeziel to talk about the neuroscience of parenting.
Developmental Psychiatrist, Bruce Perry, discovered that in the first 2 months of a child’s life one million neurons are being birthed every minute. In the first 2 years of their life, it is important for them to develop a sense of safety and predictability. It is the lens they look through for the rest of their life. Janice suggested using the 3 Rs:
Regulate: Help your child calm down
Relate: Empathise and connect with your child
Reason: Work together to find a solution
“It is not always going to work easy like that. Good enough parenting is the best kind of parenting. If you get it correct 70/30 you are doing well.”
