Understanding how your child’s brain is wired, can save a lot of stress and anxiety in the family household. Graham Irvine, from Kingsway Christian College, joined Mike to finish up their discussion on the 4 temperaments.
“We see the world through different lenses and so if I can understand my lens and then understand your lens then at least we’re going to find some compromise…. otherwise it comes down to each of us standing on a different mountain top and shouting at the other person…we know that we’re being spoken to but we don’t actually hear the words.”
The melancholic personality believes things should be done ‘the right way’. They love planning but they can get stuck in that phase and not really achieve anything. Because they are perfectionists the melancholic personality is afraid of making mistakes. As a parent it is important to remind them that sometimes perfection doesn’t happen. People with this personality are usually introverted and love having time to themselves.
The phlegmatic personality type lives by the motto ‘why do it at all’. They are good listeners and because of their great diplomatic skills they can help keep the peace. But because they are not self-disciplined and are afraid of change, the challenge as a parent is keeping them motivated.
