The concept of conflict and how we overcome it is something that comes up a lot, particularly in Australia, where we don’t really like embracing conflict as well as some other European countries. Nick Marvin, CEO of Marvin HR joined Mike to explain the 3 sources of conflict.

  1. Context: Fundamentally as human beings there is discernment between intent and action. We have an obligation to understand someone’s intent otherwise we can make negative assumptions about people that could be completely wrong. “Be empathetic and find the motivations when someone behaves in a way that creates conflict.”
  2. Weaknesses: This is where someone is expected to do something and they have a genuine weakness in that area. “Compensate for the weakness or help them work through it.”
  3. True North: This is something more sinister. Sometimes you have someone who may not have the best of intentions. “People who are not aligned in values like honesty. It’s a matter of understanding if it is a context issue, weakness issue or just does not have an aligned true north to the organisation.”
