Tennis – Ash Barty and Alex de Minaur share 2018 Newcombe Medal
Two of Aussie tennis’ brightest young stars have been honoured on Monday night with Ashleigh Barty and Alex de Minaur taking home the 2018 Newcombe Medal.
The pair tied in voting for the award, seeing the medal split for the first time ever.
Roger Federer’s conquerer John Millman and wheelchair star Dylan Alcott rounded out the nominees for the award.
Barty came into the night having taken out last year’s medal but there was going to be stiff competition this year. The 22-year-old continued her rise in 2018, reaching a career-high singles ranking of 15 and a doubles ranking of five.
Singles titles in Zhuhai and Nottingham were added to four doubles titles, though de Minaur’s meteoric rise and on-court determination saw him become plenty of Aussies’ new favourite player.
The 19-year-old rose to 31 in the world after starting the year outside the top 200.
While he didn’t claim a title on the world tour, he knocked off some big scalps and showed fans there’s plenty to look forward to from the mild-mannered youngster.
