We all know how important breakfast is. The message has been drummed into us since our early primary school years.
As parents we scan the cereal aisle in the super market searching for that elusive breakfast that is not only healthy, but our kids are actually going to eat. It’s tough, like plowing through a jungle armed only with a butter knife.
Step in Sue Joy, creator of The Joyful Table, here to rescue us from our cereal aisle woes. Joining Mike on the Weekdays show this morning, Sue provided some healthy, mouthwatering recipes for us time poor parents.
“It’s shocking the amount of sugars and artificial colours etc. in products”. Sue said there are not many healthy breakfast options.
Important info on Breakfast Cereals:
- Highly processed – the grains are heated to very high temperatures and high pressure is used to form the flakes, shapes and puffs (through this process they lose their nutrition, so the shapes are sprayed with synthetic vitamins).
- Difficult to digest – grains contain phytic acid which binds to minerals in our body like zinc, calcium, iron and magnesium and this affects how we absorb nutrients and in turn, makes it difficult to digest.
- High in sugar and carbohydrates – these both raise blood sugar levels very quickly and don’t sustain us and in a few hours we feel hungry again.

Mike was treated to Sue’s delicious (Gluten and dairy free) Apple and Cinnamon Porridge. Listen below how to make it:
The Granola Clusters were also a massive hit (left Mike drooling) . Click here for the recipe.
