Vapour streak in the skyDid you see that mysterious streak hanging over our night sky yesterday evening? There was a fair bit of speculation on social media about what caused the stream, from aliens to missiles. Aviation expert Geoffery Thomas, however, has set the record straight. The streak is actually quite a spectacular occurrence – a vapour stream.

A vapour stream is created when an aeroplanes hot air is instantly turned into ice crystal mid-air. The sky’s conditions have to perfect for this to happen!

We were able to see last night’s occurrence so well because the sun perfectly caught the ice crystals.

Even though the stream appeared to be coming from Perth, it was actually from an aircraft on an incredibly long journey from Doha to Auckland, passing over us at about 38,000 feet.
