Once a week Jeziel and Leon share a fun fact they’ve learnt over the last seven days, something that will make you raise an eyebrow and say ” sayy whhhhat?!” Whether you believe it or not – that’s up to you!

Did you know that Singapore loves mosquitoes? That’s right, the flying, biting, buzzing insect. But why would a country fall in love with an itch-inducing pest? Well, they have very special type of mosquito that is helping fight the dengue virus.

This virus causes Dengue Fever. It’s kind of like a very serious flu, causing high fever, rash and muscle and joint pain. In severe cases, there is serious bleeding and shock, which can be life-threatening. Would you believe it, this virus is actually spread by mosquitoes?

So Singapore decided to fight fire with fire, or mozzies with more mozzies.

A Singaporean research team has developed genetically modified “good mosquitos”. They get spread in the wild to go and mate with the “bad mosquitos”. Once this happens the “bad mosquitos” can no longer breed. Eventually, all the mosquitos, good and bad, will die off naturally without reproducing – taking the dengue virus with them to the grave!

So far, dengue infected mozzies have dropped by 90%. This research has been so successful that the government is building a full mosquito factory – the team have come along way from their initial “nursery room”.

Why Singapore Loves Mosquitoes!

Trust me, you have never seen anything like this in your life.Trust me, you will want to have a Mosquito Factory in your country after watching this video. Thank you so much to NEA Singapore for explaining the process to me – and for being patient with me! This is my favorite Planet Warrior Episode so far!
