No one seemed to be able to make heads or tails of the Sexual Consent Education video backed by the Federal Government. The $3.8 million campaign, dubbed the Milkshake Consent Video, was dumped just two days after it’s release.
The video, aimed at giving a simplified example of ‘Consent’. It showed a girlfriend telling her boyfriend to try her milkshake, when he said no, she smeared her shake on his face. This and other similar videos were labelled “confusing” and “concerning”.
Another development is the push for the rest of Australia to follow in Victoria’s footsteps, introducing Mandatory Sexual Consent Training in all schools.
Simon described the concept of Consent Education as “Schizophrenic”. We’re telling kids to do one thing, then telling them to do another.
There are a few key points we should be aware of:
The Focus of Consent over-rides all other Sex Ed Concepts. Eg. As long as there’s agreement between two people, whatever you do is up to you.
School’s are being forced to step in and deal with issues, normally left to parents due to an overall break down of the Family Unit.
The importance to tell it as it is. The Milkshake Consent Video is confusing. Call a Spade a Spade. It doesn’t help when kids think a penis is called a Tinky Winkle.
