Everyone loves pets. Whether you’ve got a playful pooch, a curious cat or a slippery snake, there’s something for everyone. But what if you had 1,258 pets?

Jeziel wanted to find out what it was like to take care of a multitude of exotic animals so he chatted to Lauren Eval, esteemed zoo keeper at Perth Zoo. Lauren spilled the beans on what was involved to be in charge of everything from monkeys to meerkats.

A day in the life

The average day for a zoo keeper starts at 8am. It kicks off with a general check of the animals to ensure they’re all happy, healthy and comfortable. After that there’s the unenviable job of cleaning up after all the animals, then the highlight — breakfast.

Lauren works mainly with primates, and shared her most memorable experience working with white cheeked gibbons. Jermei and monkey husband Tao were expecting and at the end of the pregnancy proved how comfortable she was with Lauren and her fellow keepers by showing off her new baby.
