This week, it was the final round of the 2018 WA SBL Women’s and Men’s Regular Season, with finals spots on the line for several teams. The number one ranked teams in the Women’s and Men’s Leagues – Lakeside Lightning and Geraldton Buccaneers respectively, won their final games of the season to head into the 2018 as red hot favourites to win their respective championships.
In the Women’s side of the draw, the South West Slammers blew a huge chance to qualify for the Finals in their final game of the season. They went down at home to the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at the Eaton Recreation Centre on Saturday night. In other action, the Rockingham Flames got a win at home over the visiting Cockburn Cougars. The Perth Redbacks locked in 2nd position, leaving the East Perth the Eagles winless through the entire regular season. In Mandurah, it was the Magic at home ending the Joondalup Wolves season with a 72-46 result for the Magic who will take on their arch rivals the Flames in the Quarter Finals.
In the Men’s league, there was a huge upset down at Eaton as the South West Slammers, on the back of 45 points from Travis Durnin, defeated the finals-bound Kalamunda Eastern Suns by 18 points on Saturday night. The Perry Lakes Hawks kept their winning streak alive as they defeated the Stirling Senators up at Warwick Stadium. The league-leading Geraldton Buccaneers were pushed the entire game by a very gallant Willetton Tigers side, with the Buccs winning a close one 94-90.
