Do you watch movies with subtitles?

Jeziel uses subtitles as he struggles to hear the dialogue. “I feel like they are not making movies like they used to. I genuinely feel like the voices are softer but everything else is louder.” But Bec finds them too distracting. “I am firmly on the no camp. If I have subtitles on I get too caught up in reading and I miss what’s going on in the background.

Overall 52% of people watch TV with subtitles on a regular basis according to a 2021 survey, with 80% of 18-24-year-olds using subtitles some, or all the time while watching content. Only 23% of those in the 56-75 age group use subtitles, despite being twice as likely to say they are deaf or hard of hearing.

Older people tend to view subtitles as requiring an extra concentration level when watching foreign-language content, while young people can take in far more information quickly because they’re used to it. Even 31% of people said they would go to live events more often if they had captions. They said that captions could help them understand what was going on.
