Imagine enduring a cold and wet winter night in Perth without a roof over your head or a warm place to sleep?
Unfortunately, this is a reality for thousands of West Australians sleeping rough in our city. This July 98five, together with One Voice, Saint Pat’s and Uniting WA, are collecting items to show our Heart for the Homeless. Michael Chester, Co-CEO Uniting WA, joined Bec to share the huge amount of interest they’ve been receiving. “We’re really pleased to be walking along side you in our efforts to address homelessness. We are receiving lots of items that are really important for people sleeping rough.”
Michael has noticed an increase in homelessness among a few groups of people. Such as single women over age 55, who are fleeing domestic violence. Children just over 18 we don’t have the same resources as adults to access rentals. The rising cost of living has also put immense pressure on people. “Some people have had to sleep in their cars.”
“If you would like to help recognise the issue of homeless in our community. In terms of practical support there are opportunities for volunteering and donations are always welcomed for the programs we offer.”
If you would like to get involved you can drop off your items at one of our many drop off points. Let us know your thoughts by texting or messaging us on socials. Listen to the full chat below!
