The Australian Premiere of ‘Nevermore: The Imaginary Life & Mysterious Death of Edgar Allen Poe’, is hitting Subiaco Arts Centre this December!
A show that combines haunting music and poetic story telling to depict the life of the iconic American writer, Edgar Allen Poe. Cal Silverstein, who plays Edgar Allen Poe, joined Bec and Jeziel to tell us more about this musical. Because the spoken sections are in iambic pentameter, he says rehearsals have been intense. “Everything has to be quite meticulously thought out in terms of planning to maintain that rhythm.”
But his favourite part is the music which is an interesting fusion of 2000s emo rock and Victorian Goth. “It’s a magnificent blend of all these different styles.” As well as working with his co-stars who play 5-6 characters across the show. Amazed to see them change voices and aesthetics for each one.
As a child Cal loved playing pretend and continued to do so by getting involved in theatre. He joined the Midnight Youth Theatre company and worked with them through high school. He was also a part of the University Dramatics Society at UWA and studied theatre at New York University. “It’s really been this one constant throughout my life.”
