This week is Men’s Mental Health Week. While it’s important for us all to be mentally healthy, for men, that can be a struggle. Men are supposed to be tough and resilient, which makes a mental illness especially difficult.
Clinical Psychologist Janice Dommisse from Masters Psychology joined Mel and Jeziel in the studio this week to discuss the topic. The long and short of it is that there is a huge difference between men and women when it comes to mental health. For example, in men, suicide is not largely linked with depression. Studies have shown that while depression is involved, more often than not, men suicide for other reasons. For men, it’s often due to large, stressful events, such as a relationship breakdown or financial issues. This means it’s often a more sudden occurrence, which makes it harder for friends and family to see the warning signs.
