If you don’t know Mel from The Drive Show, here’s one quick fact: she LOVES animals. She loves animals so much so wants to share it with the family. So once a week she shares one of her favourite animal stories.

Nothing could get in the way of Norman, the golden labrador fulfilling his destiny.

Abandoned at one a year old, Norman the labrador was living in an animal shelter. He was already held longer than usual, and when Annette met him, he was scheduled to be put down the very next day. Annette sensed there was something special about Norman, and felt she had to take him home.

A few months went by and Norman began to lose his sight, eventually becoming totally blind. But this was not going to stop him living his life. Annette and Norman adjusted and moved on.

One day, Annette decided she would stay home from work. She walked him down to the local estuary and Norman heard something. He pulled away from Annette and he started galloping towards the water. He ran 150 metres blind. Annette had no idea what was going on, she couldn’t hear anything. But he had heard a girl screaming. She and her brother had been caught in a current. She couldn’t touch the ground and the water was pulling her under.

Norman jumped into the water, but as the girl was losing her breath and making less noise, Norman was losing his bearings.

Eventually Annette caught up, she yelled at the girl to call him by name. So with her last might, the girl in the water starts yelling “Norman, Norman!”

At the last moment, when the girl thought her hope was lost, Norman found her. She held onto him as he swam out and saved her life.
