Victoria was hit by the largest earthquake recorded in the State’s history.
The 5.9 magnitude earthquake not only shook Melbourne, tremors were felt in NSW and Tasmania. The first earthquake was detected in the Mansfield region, at around 9:15AM and was 10km deep. It was followed by 6 aftershocks with more expected in upcoming weeks and months.
Bec’s mother-in-law, Sue Jones, lives in Melbourne. She joined Bec and Jeziel to tell us about her experience. Sue was reading when she felt the bed beneath her begin to shake. Initially, she thought a helicopter was passing by. But after the walls, roof and windows started to wobble, she ran out of the house for safety. “Once outside you feel it through your feet. I was telling my friend we both experienced this sense of suddenly being very small in the face of tremendous power.” Fortunately Sue, her family and their home are safe. But the earthquake was strong enough to cause damage to an old building in Chapel Street.
