The news and the internet are buzzing with chatter about The Duke and Duchess of Sussex this morning. Just a few hours ago Harry and Meghan announced that they were “stepping back” from their senior roles in the Royal Family. With the aim of becoming financially independent and pursuing their own charity organisation, the family will split their time between the UK and North America.
#Megxit is trending on Twitter
As you can imagine, all over the world speculators, gossips, “inside sources” and royal correspondents are firing off their opinions and ideas about why and whether or not they approve. #Megxit (a play on ‘Brexit’) is even trending on Twitter!
Harry, Meghan and baby Archie have just spent 6 weeks in Canada. Flying under the radar, enjoying a very private holiday – they weren’t even photographed once! Some are saying it seems like the family realised how much they enjoyed this quiet time. That they’d like to make this their permanent style of living.
Others are arguing that this is just about money. Going out on their own apparently means the couple could monetise their brand and keep all the profits. While TV personalities like Piers Morgan and Katie Hopkins are slandering Meghan. Accusing her of “dividing brothers” and “dividing families”.
On The Summer Brekky Show this morning Rach shared about the sympathy she has for Meghan. “Ever since they got married Meghan has been harassed by the press. There have been some really awful stories and rumours written about her. No wonder she wants to get away from it all. Not many of us could stand people talking about us like that for very long.”
Listener Kathi, who originates from Windsor and even “bumped in Harry a few times around the neighbourhood”, called into the show to share that she was not surprised by the announcement.
Kathi believes Harry has always yearned for a more private life and Meghan hasn’t forced this on him. She says The Duke has always been an introverted person, he’s just had to put on an extroverted front for his position. Kathi recalled a time where she was working at a theme park in the UK and the 15-year-old prince just rocked up with no announcement and no security! “Now that The Duke and Duchess have their own family and after the trauma of how his mum Princess Diana died – it should be no surprise they’ve made this move.”
In a very candid interview with Tom Bradby a few months ago the couple shared about their struggle with parenting, their positions and the criticism they receive. Meghan said she didn’t want to become a voiceless figurehead; but when she raised her voice, she found criticism waiting for her. While Harry shared “I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit sussexroyal.com (link in bio) Image © PA
Rubbing salt into the wounds of the Palace
The real stinger in all this is that it seems like Harry and Meghan made this announcement (to their own social media) without telling anyone else in the family.
Not even the Queen or Prince William – were consulted before the statement was made and Buckingham Palace is “disappointed”.
More questions than answers have been raised. Does this mean Harry is out of succession for the throne? Will the family no longer take a royal paycheck? What does a part-time royal look like?
One thing is for sure…
No matter what the reason is, there is no excuse for the unsightly, offensive things being said about Meghan Markle online. Cyberbullying is never justifable, especially at the rate of the hundreds of thousands of comments she’s receiving.
