Being out of jail a better chance in rehabilitation?

When a family member in jail is offered to apply for parole and needs your help to get them out, would you help or think it would be safer for them to stay in jail to overcome substance abuse?

Hear what CEO of Shalom House Peter Lyndon-James has to say about jail and rehabilitation. This was the question: Hi Peter. When someone is in jail and they’ve been invited to apply for parole, the parole board then wants letters of support for that prisoner to come out into society on parole. It seems that in the letter of support, one is not just to say that we’ll support him when he comes out, emotionally or otherwise; but also we need to suggest that we think he’ll never commit an offence again. This is the difficult part because we just don’t know or are not sure. One thing is for sure, the longer they stay in, the more they become involved with other criminals. So coming out would give them the best chance at rehabilitation maybe? What are your thoughts?

Q: Do you have any idea what the police process is for following up leads regarding dealers? We have passed on the info to police, politicians and crime stoppers over about two years. He is still there dealing misery and as far as we know never has been charged.

Q: I sent a text to my friend saying the following: I love you, but can’t deal with your lifestyle, we’re too different these days mate. I can’t do anything with you until you change your life long term. I’ll see you tomorrow but I’m not interested in being friends with you the way you are at this stage. A lot of us are feeling the same way, we’re over meth and we want to be left alone. If we matter to you like you matter to us you will change! Is this too harsh?

With school leavers coming up, lots of parents are concerned with their children using drugs while celebrating. Here are some advice about having the conversation with your teenage son or daughter.
