Dr Innis Cloete, from Kingsway Vet Centre, joined Bec and Jeziel to tell us more about our furry best friends.
This time of year, a lot of us are suffering from hay fever. But while we deal with a runny nose and itchy eyes dogs can get itchy skin. The allergic reaction is a type of ‘atopy’ caused by the body’s response to allergens in the air. A pollen allergy is much less common than an allergy to fleas or dust and it’s not easy to tell the difference unless your dog has an allergy test.
You might notice your dog is experiencing fur loss and red flaky skin. Any other time of year might be an allergy to dust or fleas. “If your dog has started itching now 99% sure they have got atopy or dog hay fever.” Take your dog to the vet for an allergy test and they can also prescribe medication to treat their immune system.
