Meghan Markle has had a lot to get used to in the last few months. From royal engagements, to tours and of course, becoming an official member of the royal family. But one tradition she may have to become accustomed to is extending her bedtime.

According to Sir William Heseltine — one of the Queen’s private secretaries — when staying with Her Majesty, members of the royal family should wait until the Queen retires to bed, before they also hit the hay. He explained that it’s considered “bad form” to go to bed before Her Majesty.

But upon researching this story Mel discovered another interesting behaviour of Her Majesty.

The Queen gives subtle hints to her staff using her handbag. If she places it on a chair, as she it means she’s happy to have a long chat with her guest. If the Queen puts her handbag on a table it means she’s happy to chat to her guest for five minutes. But if it’s on the floor, it’s a signal that she wants her staff to interfere and end the conversation.

So on The Drive Show Mel & Jeziel asked the family what are you secret signals?

Listener Leslie tells us about how she must also wait for her English grand mother in law to go to bed before she does and how that went wrong. And listener Anne tells us about her family’s secret signals came from teaching her baby sign language!
