Graham Irvine has 3 children, and is expecting his 4th grandchild to arrive any day now.
So as an experienced parent, he shared some tips with newbie parent Jeziel. His first piece of advice, remember that you have a baby. Graham had to learn this the hard way when he and his wife were about to leave to play tennis. “You know when your wife just gives you that look and you know that there is something wrong. But you don’t know what it is.” He almost forgot to bring their baby, who was only 3 weeks old at the time.
Your baby is joining your life, not the other way around. “You whole world shouldn’t be turned over.” He emphasised the importance for parents to prioritise time together. Graham often talks about lawn mower parents. A lawn mower parent is someone who mows the grass in front of their child so they don’t have to step on anything prickly or harmful. Although they may have good intentions of protecting their child, shielding them from every risk can prevent them from developing the skills to handle distressing situations. “Resilience occurs when we allow our children to fail.” As a frequent guest on Weekdays, Graham loves being able to share tips like this as well as hope for parents.
“Hope is the anticipation the future will be better. Anything that 98five does that helps people anticipate that tomorrow will be better actually adds hope to their life.”
