Graham Irvine, Dean of Christian Formation at Kingsway Christian College, joined Mike on Weekdays to discuss the Four Seasons of Parenting. The four seasons of parenting

As your child grows and develops you face new parenting challenges which can be difficult to keep up with. The end goal of parenting is to encourage your child to be independent.

“It’s about developing that idea of how can we help our children to understand the dynamic of making choices. Because they’re going to have none then they’re going to be an independent adult, which means they make their own choices.”

The first stage of parenting is dictatorship which occurs in the early years of their life. This stage moves into being a boss. Being a boss evolves over time as you gradually give your child more choices.  The third stage involves being coach, allowing your child to assert their independence. This will allow your child to grow up to become a independent adult who is capable of making good choices. “Be a dictator, boss a coach and then you will get to be their friend.”
