Last week Graham Irvine from Kingsway Christian College, joined Mike on Weekdays to talk about the Seasons of Parenting.four seasons of parenting

As a parent your main goal is to help your child become independent, so as they grow older you allow them make more choices for themselves. This is what Graham called the 4 Seasons of Parenting: Dictator, Boss, Coach and Friend. This week Graham and Mike dove deeper into the subject and acknowledge listener concerns over his terminology. Sarah agrees that small children can get overwhelmed with too many choices and look to adults for help and guidance. But she thinks parents are more like leaders not dictators.

However putting boundaries in place doesn’t mean you shouldn’t acknowledge feelings and help your child make choices. “The Boss is not the authoritarian parent…we use it as: we are the people at the beginning of the boss stage where we make most of the choices. But gradually as our children move from 3 to 5 to 8 etc…the choices we make for them become less and less.”

“As I look at parenting, it’s actually one of the most difficult things to do, is to navigate this space of changing seasons.”
