If you don’t know Mel from The Drive Show, here’s one quick fact: she LOVES animals. She loves animals so much so wants to share it with the family. So once a week she shares one of her favourite animal videos.
3 year old Alida was diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Hyperplasia of Infancy (NEHI) when she was just 9 months old. There are too many cells in her lung tissue, which makes it difficult for oxygen to pass into her blood.
This means, almost always, she must be hooked up to an oxygen tank. For a busy little 3 year old with things to do, having to carry around a heavy metal tank will not do. In steps dad. Alida’s dad experimented with 5 different prototype ‘carts’ to encase the tanks so she could push it around. These carts worked well and good in the house, but dad was worried they wouldn’t travel so well outside.
Dad wants Alida to have as normal of a childhood as possible, which definitely means playing outside.
So what’s the solution for Alida? It’s Mister Gibbs!
Mister Gibb’s is Alida’s service dog and “his job is to carry my Os” she says. He’s trained to follow her everywhere, even down the playground slide! Being able to strap Alida’s tanks to him, means she can go wherever her imagination will take her.
He’s still a puppy and still has a lot to learn, but Alida’s furry best friend has saved her life.
