There is a massive need for Foster Carers across Australia at the moment, so Pauline from Key Assets Foster Care joined Mike to explain what it means to be a foster carer and why it is the most rewarding decision you’ll ever make.

Over 20 years ago, Pauline started to consider becoming a foster carer after the birth of her first child. She was reading an article in TIME Magazine and saw a photo of an orphanage. She was saddened to see rows and rows of babies and only one carer looking after them. “That image really struck me. I think it was because I was becoming a mum for the first time. It bothered me that so many children were not being loved.”

Children in the foster care system have been removed from their homes due to drugs, alcohol, abuse or neglect. These children have had rough starts, and after experiencing all that trauma they need a loving family home. But unfortunately, there are more kids entering the system than parents available.

Anybody who is motivated to help a child in need can become a foster carer. If you have a spare bedroom, the extra time, and the ability to understand their needs then it is a great decision to consider. “It’s never going to be a perfect cookie cutter scenario… there’s always going to be obstacles to get over, but the great thing is, you work with a great team and there’s always a solution to any problem.”
