What is my first step in helping my troubled loved one?

When our loved ones go through difficult times of battling addiction, we would feel hopeless if we don’t know what is the best way to help, and what are the first steps in helping.

Peter Lyndon-James, CEO of Perth’s drug rehabilitation centre Shalom House, has first-hand experience on substance abuse and how families can help one breakthrough this bondage of addiction. Have a listen to Peter’s response to some questions posted by our listeners.

Q: My brother is over east by himself, and his girlfriend has nearly given up on him. He has become alcoholic after being made redundant, and previous ice addiction many years ago, too. What should be   our first step?

Q: I have a restraining order on my son. He has been speaking with my other son and has been telling him he wishes he could talk to me. Should I wait until March when the restraining order is lifted or should I talk to him now?

Q: Hi Pete, really struggling to have boundaries with my dad as hes is an enabler for my sister who is in prison and been a long term user! This addiction literally killed my mum 5 years ago! I don’t want to completely disown him for my kids’ sake. Any advice appreciated.

Q: My wife’s mother is struggling with addiction. We are unsure how to deal with it because every time someone approaches her about the issue, there is hostility and it’s met with aggressive behaviour. We just don’t know how to deal with it and what to do.

Q: What do you think about low end drug use such as cannabis, marijuana, nitrous oxide? I have a 26-year-old son at home who uses these with the same regularity that I would use wine – ie perhaps one glass four nights a week. He equates it to social alcohol use, but he is a moderate drinker. I don’t like the drug use, but since I do drink some alcohol, it feels hypocritical to nag him about drugs.

Tough Love Seminars this week – Dongara Thursday night at Irwin Recreational Centre from 6:30pm and Geraldton Saturday from 1pm at POSH Events and Functions Centre. More details can be found on Shalom House’s Facebook page.
