In 2016 Louise and her friends were faced with the fact that millions of girls all over the world cannot afford to go to school. Thinking of their own children these women were heart broken – but they didn’t want to just forget and move on.
So they came up with an idea. It started on Louise’s kitchen bench with a small pot – they were going to make and sell candles to raise money to empower these girls and so Empowering Chicks was born. After a year of 12 hour days on Saturday and Sunday in a small garage, they now have a full factory!
So why just girls?
“We (louise and co founder Priscilla) had a good education and our kids have good educations and when we became single mothers that school community came around us and lifted us up and we couldn’t bear to think that there are girls out there without that kind of support.”
Families in these countries rally around to support the sons as they are seen as ‘the earners’ and the daughters are often only seen as ‘child-bearers’ and sold to brothels.
It only takes $30 a month to fully fund a girl to go to school and this includes all her supplies and uniforms.
Louise and Priscilla stopped by the studio to tell us their stories and show off their candles and they smell AND 100% of their profits go to funding education for these girls.
Head over to the Empower Chicks website if you would like to support them and score yourself a delicious candle or listen to their stories below.
