The more people I meet the more I have evidence to justify that the happiest people are the people who believe in the beauty of their dreams. And those people believe in the power of their dreams.
Think back to when you were a child…what did you want to be when you grew up?
Now think to maybe 10 years ago…what was your dream?
And what about five years ago?
Have those things changed over time? Most likely some aspect of your dreams have changed over time but think about your dream right now — do you spend as much time and energy thinking about it as you did when you were younger?
It saddens me when we think “dreaming is for children”, or it’s “part of growing up” to throw those dreams away or put them on the shelf in order to “face reality”. This is such an unhelpful way of thinking and I’ll tell you why:
Our joy relies on our dreams.
To live your very best life, you need to dream and dream often! We need to have a vision of where we want to go, because if we don’t, we are left at the mercy of every kind of influence surrounding us. In today’s world, that isn’t a good thing. Dreams inspire us. Dreams propel us forward if we spend enough time focusing on them.
And finally, dare
When I talk to people I trust about my dreams I am completely inspired. Even if absolutely nothing has gone in my favour that day, I know I still have my dream, and no one can ever take them away. Don’t give up on your dream. No matter how old, how broken, how tired, or how disqualified you might feel. Your dreams are far too important to give up on.
Instead, you could try:
1. Find your dream
If you have a dream, spend time thinking about it. Who are you in 5, 10, 15, 20 years? Picture it, write it down, and imagine what it looks like, feels like, and sounds like. Remind yourself of this often. If you feel like you don’t have a dream, take the time to really think about it, without letting your current circumstances limit you. It’s not that you don’t have a dream, you’ve just forgotten what yours feels like.
Respect and honour yourself enough to pour time and energy into this. Your life is far to precious not to.
2. Believe in its power
Your dreams and vision are one of the most powerful things you can ever access. Your dreams really do have the power to change your life. Your dreams are yours, no one else’s. Your dreams may change over time but no matter what happens no one can take your dreams away from you. Only you have that power. Use it wisely.
3. Activate that power
Like anything, dreams need fuel. So the more you put into them (the more time you spend thinking about them, praying into them, talking about them with people you trust, writing them down), the more potential they will have.
Dreams have the power to change your life, if you act on them while truly believing in them. I like to make sure that every day I am doing at least one thing to get me closer to my dream. Some days you feel totally on top of things and on those days it’s very important to make the most of your time. And some days you do feel like you’re taking 10 steps backwards, and that’s OK because we are human. Just getting up and out of bed and making a commitment to try your best is a really great thing.
Your dreams, whatever they are, are amazing. Have the courage to step into them. You have absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain.
4. Don’t stop
Life does come in peaks and troughs but one thing you can do, no matter the season you’re in, is keep that dream alive. It’s up to you to adjust what you’re doing to act on your dreams, to fit within your current circumstances. Some seasons that will be a lot while others it might only be a little. The important thing is do not stop. Whether you’re running in leaps and bounds or crawling, you’re still moving.
Have the belief in yourself to really take hold of the things that are most important to you. Don’t let them go. You are too loved, too valued, and too precious for that. Have you seen the world lately? It needs you!
