Vaccinations are crucial to ensuring our pets are happy and healthy.
So Dr Innis Cloete, from Kingsway Vet Centre, joined Bec and Jeziel to tell us more about vaccinations. Humoral immunity is the ability of the body to remember what viruses look like. Humans can remember viruses longer than dogs. Vaccinations for dogs are more frequent as you have to remind the system what the virus looks like. Dr Innis recommended that dogs owners ensure they’re pups are vaccinated against Kennel Cough, Parvo and distemper hepatitis.
Kennel Cough is highly contagious and is common around the changing of the seasons. “You only need one dog to go around a park, that’s not even clinically ill, to spread this virus around.” Vaccinations against Kennel Cough are very effective as they limit the amount of disease by 98%.
Parvo is a horrendous disease that infects the intestine. It usually happens as puppies transition to adulthood and lose their maternal immunity. Common symptoms include loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea with blood.
“Just get your dog vaccinated, same with your cat”
