Dr Innis Cloete, from Kingsway Vet Centre, joined Bec and Jeziel to tell us more about our furry best friends.
Any animal can get a UTI, “Anything that has a bladder can get a UTI.” The inflammation and infection is contained in the bladder but symptoms can include urinating more, blood in the urine, squatting, going in awkward places and a burning sensation.
In cats, a scalding effect penetrates the protective mechanism of the bladder. Proceeding this comes stress which can cause crystals. “They are like sharp little shards. so they are pretty uncomfortable.” Dogs can get UTIs due to stones, which have to be removed surgically. It is likely caused by a dietary issue that needs to be addressed.
