I remember when I was about 12 and my younger sister Ellen was 8 and Dora the Explorer was her favourite thing. She could sit in front of the TV for hours listening to Dora say “Vamonos.. ok now you say it … now say it again!” or “point to where we should go next…” While tick-tocking music played (for what seemed like far too long), giving time for the children to engage with the Spanish animation.

So Dora the Explorer the cartoon series was not my favourite childhood show, but I am low key excited to see the live action remake Dora and the Lost City of Gold. The movie has left the Spanish lessons and the blue, interactive computer cursor on the Nickelodeon kids channel, swapping this out for some real adventure and heart! Dora the Lost City of Gold seems like more of a tomb raider for teens than the “kiddy show” it was once known as.
