Would you use a designated ‘texting car bay’ placed along a busy road?

It appears we’ve come a long way from the quaint rest stop with a humble picnic table and rubbish bin and, possibly, public toilet.

Future Australian public rest stops could also include power outlets, wifi, and creative marketing opportunities.

Currently being used in the US, especially designed Safe Phone Zones aim to encourage drivers to take a rest stop and check their messages safely, and the WA Road Safety Commissioner Kim Papalia is watching the initiative closely to see if it’s something that could work here too.

It’s just one of a number of ideas being considered to combat WA’s increasing addiction of using mobile phones while driving.
