Graham Irvine from Riverview Church tells us, not only do we as a parent have a personality style and not only does our partner have a personality style as a parent, but our kids have their own personalities. Over the last few weeks, Graham has been discussing the different personality types as catagorised by Florence Littauer, in her book Personality Plus.
There’s a copy for couples and a copy for parents, Graham highly reccomends this book.
Today Graham and mike are exploring the powerful choleric. This personality is the easiest to recognise. “As soon as they can stand, they get up in their cot, look through the bars and say ‘whether you like it or not, I’m here to take over’. ”
The motto of the choleric is “do it my way.” Choleric and Sanguine are the two extrovert personalities. So the choleric and the sanguine both love having people around. However the sanguine loves having people around just because they love people. The Choleric loves having people around so that they can tell them what to do.
So of course, they can be some of the most difficult to parent.
The #1 piece of advice I can give you is…
You must have boundaries.
You must be consistent with the boundaries. But, no matter what, you’re going to bang heads because that’s just who they are, they want to be in charge. So from an early age, give them things they can be in charge of. Fulfill that need in them. “Ok you’re in charge of getting yourself dressed in the morning.. you can be in charge of this…” but those decisions are within the framework you set up as the parent.
