It’s no secret that Mel loves all things furry, just ask her about her pup Harlem and she’ll melt and get all giggly. An absolutely sure way to brighten up her day is to show her an animal video you’ve seen on Facebook or Instagram because she doesn’t have social media herself!
So because she loves these stories and videos so much, she wants to share them with you family. So grab the tissues and get ready to gawk, as we present Mel’s Furry Tails!
This week’s furry tail is the story of Joao Pereira de Souza and DinDim the penguin.
In 2011 de Souza was walking along the beach when he spotted a small penguin, trapped by a thick covering of oil, starving. De Souza gained the animal’s trust and took him home. Over the next week, de Souza cleaned him up, gently removing the tar and fed him daily dishes of fish to increase his strength. He then took the penguin back to the beach to set him free but the penguin didn’t leave! He stayed with de Souza for 11 months and then when his feathers changed, decided it was time to swim away.
Now here is the amazing thing, after the penguin was released back into the wild de Souza thought he’d probably never see his feathery friend again. He was wrong! Every year the penguin, now named DinDim travels over 8000km back to that very beach to visit his rescuer!
“I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,” said de Souza “No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks them if they do. He lays on my lap, honks with happiness, lets me give him showers, allows me to feed him sardines and to pick him up.”
