Steve Hall, CEO of Adult & Teen Challenge WA , joined Mike with a special guest. Ben shared his extremely challenging yet inspiring life story.
Ben was born into a physically, and emotionally, abusive home. “My dad was a pretty heavy hitter in the wrong way for some pretty terrible people. My mum was a broken woman…Traumatic situations in her life had a ripple effect into my life.” Constantly moving schools, never making friends and bullying made his school life just as challenging. In an attempt to cope with the trauma, Ben turned to drugs at just 8-years-old. As he got older, he was also involved in major criminal activity. Wanting to turn his life around, Ben entered rehab and spent 6 months at a mental institute. But he was told he had no hope for his life.
After entering Adult & Teen Challenge, Ben learnt about Jesus. Remembering his traumatic childhood with his father, Ben couldn’t comprehend a heavenly father that loved him unconditionally. He called out to God for help and a still gentle voice said: “Where have you been?” He suddenly felt all the pain and trauma disappear as if it never mattered.
“I told God, I’m going to chase you as hard as I chased drugs (I used to kick down doors for drugs)…I’ll give you the year that I’m here and do the program and if you rock up I’ll follow you the rest of my life. If you don’t I’ll never look to you again. It took about 10 minutes for Him to rock up.”
When Ben left the program, he discovered his father, cousin and aunty had murdered his uncle. “As a man on drugs I wouldn’t have been able to deal with that. But as a man of God I knew that I could get through.” Ben was lonely and never thought he would have a family. But he is excited to be getting married in March! He worked at Teen Challenge and lead people through prayer. Ben encourages anyone struggling to reach out and let someone know, because they do care.
