This Sunday, garden centres across the country are turning blue to shine a spotlight on the positive effect gardening has on mental health and well-being.

Garden Releaf Day will see around 100 garden centres nationwide hosting blue-themed activities for the whole family, as well as donating proceeds to beyondblue — a support service for those struggling with depression and anxiety.

To celebrate this great weekend, Gardens from Eden and 98five’s garden expert Colin Barlow joined Mike in the studio, bringing with him Tim Parker from Dawson’s Garden World and some brilliantly blue themed plants.

With beautiful blue flowers and black stems, the Salvia Black and Bloom are lovely shrubs. Often grown in hot or humid climates, it’s perfectly suited for Perth. It grows to about a metre in height and spread, and requires little attention.

If you like tiny colourful fruit, you’ll love the classic Blueberry. Well suited for pots, the plant will produce delicious berries over a long period, meaning you can harvest every day for a fresh crop.

And while Mike’s hair isn’t quite ‘on blue trend’ for the occasion — instead green for Friday’s St Patrick’s Day/World’s Greatest Shave (colour) — he at least…kind of…blended in with the plant leaves and let the blueberries take centre stage.

OK, we can’t take our eyes off his hair either!
