Sophie Thomson, of Sophie’s Patch, has shared a very important message about the danger of astro turf in our Aussie climate.
Sophie shares a photo of her measuring the temperature of some astro turf against a nearby real-grass oval. On the 35* day in Murray Bridge (South Australia) the astro turf was double the temperature of the real grass!
Sophie aired her concern about people being burnt by the synthetic grass, especially children playing sport on ovals made out of the fake material.
‘Two people have told me that they know of sports fields that are watered before they are used on very hot days,’ she told Kidspot.
‘I read comments from parents about the glue in their kids’ sneakers melting from the heat on fake turf ovals. They’re plastic, they’re made from petrochemicals and we shouldn’t have kids playing on that.’
