Mental Health Week is annual celebration to promote the importance of mental health.
Adrian Munro, from Richmond Wellbeing, joined Mike to tell us more about this years theme: ‘Mental health starts with our children.’ We are seeing increased incidents of mental health issues in our youth across. Adrian emphasised:
“It’s not a case of it having been around for a long time and we’re only just becoming more aware of it. All the research shows the youth of today are experiencing more mental distress than youth of any other time.”
Some people will ask “There is less difficulties in society. We don’t have 17-year-olds going off to war and we have all these resources Life is relatively stable, why have we got all these mental health issues?” There is lots of conversation on the impact technology and social media is having on our youth. Particularly the loss of physical connection which Adrian says is important to staying mentally healthy.
“Protecting your mental health is having a sense of community. A group of people where I can say I belong”
