A woman discovered she had been using her handbrake wrong her whole life, and she is not the only one.

Emily posted a video showing that she puts her car in park before pulling the handbrake. “I’m so confused, I need someone to help me. I put the car in park and then I put the handbrake on. Is this wrong?” Jean McDonald, another driver, shared advice backed up by many drivers’ education websites. He explained that putting the car in park before using the handbrake could cause serious damage to the gearbox. “When you put your car in park and then put your handbrake on, the entire weight of the car is on the gearbox.”

So he urged people to put their car in ‘neutral’ before using the handbrake. “That way, the weight of the car is resting on the handbrake and not the gearbox.” Lastly, you put the car in park before taking out your keys. Many people admitted they had been doing the same thing and had no idea they were making a mistake. “I’ve been driving for six years glad I learned this now!” One person commented.

Jeziel has been making the same mistake but has disregarded the advice as ‘rubbish’. “I’m not a mechanic, but I call rubbish.” Bec discovered that her car has an automatic parking brake. “It’s a hybrid car. As soon as I put my foot on the brake and turn the engine off the parking brake comes on. This is genius!.”
