Psalm 19:14 May my words and thoughts please you. LORD, you are my Rock—the one who rescues me.

Life seems to be a pretty constant tussle between pleasing ourselves and pleasing other people. Sometimes we get that balance right … other times not so much. And when we do get it wrong, life ends up a mess.

So, as you roll out of bed each morning, who do you set about pleasing? Yourself, others, God … or maybe you don’t think about it all that much?

Watch this devotion below.

Over the years, painful experience has led me to the conclusion that not thinking about it all that much ain’t such a good policy – because when we don’t think about it, life ends up out of kilter.

Some of us (me, included) default to pleasing ourselves to the detriment of others and certainly to the detriment of our relationship with God. Others end up living their lives as people-pleasers, as doormats, to other people’s demands. Either way, it’s just not a good way of living.

Here’s how King David put it in his prayer to God:

Psalm 19:14 May my words and thoughts please you. LORD, you are my Rock—the one who rescues me.

David was a man after God’s own heart – and his heart, his priority, was to please God. That involves sacrifice. It involves forgiving people. It involves zipping your lip when you want to give someone else a piece of your mind. In fact, it involves a lot of things that we don’t naturally want to do.

So why does David want to do those things? Because, LORD, you are my Rock—the one who rescues me.

That’s his motivation. How many times has God been your Rock? How many times has He rescued you? Live your life, first and foremost, to please Him.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
