A deep-sea dwelling football fish was washed up on a San Diego beach. Jay Beiler initially thought he spotted a jellyfish. But after closer inspection he noticed it was something unusual. “I have never seen anything quite like this before…I go to the beach fairly often. But I’ve never seen an organism that looked quite as fearsome as this.” Researchers identified it as a species of anglerfish, when they attempted to find the fish it had already been carried back to sea.
